How to Flush a Water Heater in Texas Hard Water Areas

Why sediment builds up, how to drain it safely and how often to do it.

By the Water Heater Texas Pros Team · Updated October 2026

Flushing a water heater removes sediment from the bottom of the tank. In Texas hard water areas, that sediment builds faster, which is why a flush is one of the most useful routine jobs you can do.

Why Flushing Matters

Minerals in hard water settle as sediment. A thick layer makes the burner or elements work harder, can cause popping or rumbling noises and may shorten the life of the tank.

How to Flush a Tank Water Heater

  1. Turn the power off (electric) or the gas control to pilot or off (gas).
  2. Close the cold water supply valve.
  3. Connect a hose to the drain valve and run it to a floor drain or outside.
  4. Open a hot water tap in the house, then open the drain valve.
  5. Let it drain until the water runs clear, then close the drain valve.
  6. Reopen the cold supply with the hot tap open until water flows steadily, then restore power or gas.

Water from the tank is hot enough to scald, so let it cool first and wear gloves.

How Often

Once a year is common. In hard water areas, some professionals suggest every six months for older tanks. See our full maintenance checklist.

When to Call a Pro

If the drain valve is stuck, the water will not run clear, the tank is leaking or the unit is very old, stop and call a licensed technician. Flushing an old tank can sometimes reveal leaks. If yours is failing, read what to do when a water heater leaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it OK to flush a water heater?

Yes, for most tanks. It is a standard maintenance task, though very old tanks can develop leaks after being disturbed.

How often should I flush my water heater in Texas?

Annually is typical, and more often in very hard water areas or for older tanks.

Why is my water heater making a popping noise?

Sediment trapped under the heating surface can cause popping or rumbling. A flush often reduces it.

Does flushing work on tankless heaters?

Tankless units are descaled rather than flushed like a tank. That uses a cleaning solution and is often done by a professional.
