Water Heater Leaking? What to Do First

Safe first steps, common leak sources and when to replace the unit.

By the Water Heater Texas Pros Team · Updated October 2026

A leaking water heater can damage floors and walls fast. The first few minutes matter, and the source of the leak tells you whether a repair is possible.

Do This First

  1. Turn off the power (breaker for electric) or set the gas control to off.
  2. Close the cold water shutoff valve on top of the heater.
  3. Protect the area. Move items, mop standing water and use towels or a wet vac.
  4. Take photos if you may need to document damage for an insurance claim.
  5. Call a licensed plumber or water heater technician.

Where the Leak Comes From

Repair or Replace

If the leak is from a fitting or valve, repair is possible. If the tank has failed, replacement is the answer. Read how long water heaters last and what affects replacement cost.

If water has already spread, see our statewide resources, or request service in San Antonio or your city from the home page.
